Putney Westerfield's Trip Reports

Pakistan - October 1997

Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chilas, Skardu, Gilgit Hunza, Sust, Kunjerab Pass, Swat, Peshawar, Khyber Pass

Why Pakistan? – no one goes there. It’s neighbor India is my favorite destination: six trips so far. Pakistan was part of India through many centuries of Indian history, until 1948 when the British left, and in the process created a Hindu India and a Muslim Pakistan. India has thrived. Pakistan has stalled. Still, this nation of 200 million is so extraordinarily diverse: from the deserts of Baluchistan to the towering peaks of the Karakorum to the historic Khyber Pass through which invading armies have moved throughout history.
